Inspiring Trust in Global Contexts: Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility

Professor of Ethics at Universitat Jaume I, Castellón. Doctor in Philosophy from Valencia University, further studies in Politics at Frankfurt (Germany) and St Gallen (Switzerland). He has been Director of the Department of Philosophy and Sociology, and Pro-vice-chancellor of Communication.

He is author of the books: Teoría de la justicia (Madrid, 1992); Teoría de la democracia (Valencia, 1993), Ética Empresarial (Madrid, 1994), La empresa socialmente responsable. Etica y empresa (Madrid, 2003), Razón pública y éticas aplicadas, (Tecnos, 2003, together with A.Cortina), Ética empresarial: del diálogo a la confianza, (Madrid, 2004), Integrating the Ethical Perspective (together with M.Büscher and Hans De Geer, München 2005).

The results of this research have materialised in work carried out for different companies and institutions, in managing national research projects on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and in collaboration as an expert on a variety of European projects. He is currently Director of the “Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility Observatory of the Autonomous Region of Valencia” and is a member of the Forum of Experts on Corporate Social Responsibility of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, as well as of the ETNOR Foundation. He is Director of the Interuniversity Doctorate Programme “Ethics and Democracy” at Universitat Jaume I and a consultant on matters of Ethics and Social Responsibility.

Head of Technical Services of the FERRO Ceramic Division in the Spanish domestic market.

In 1980 Technical and Development Manager of the FERRO branch in Venezuela (3 years), Technical Manager of the Mexico branch (2 years), and Operations and General Manager of the Taiwan (China) branch for a period of 5 years.

At present, Head of the Area for Analysis and Tests at the Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica, a Mixed Institute created by agreement between Universitat Jaume I of Castellón and the Ceramic Industry Research Association (AICE), with which it has collaborated in technical work since 1989.

Researcher in 31 R&D and Technological Consulting projects conducted at the Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica, funded by ceramic tile manufacturers, frit and glaze producers, machinery builders for the ceramic industry, roofing tile and brick manufacturers, etc., as well as by public bodies belonging to the Valencia Region, Spanish State, and European Union.

Co-inventor of three patented devices relating to Chemical Engineering and Ceramic Technology.

Author of 13 research papers and 22 communications at conferences on different subjects relating to Ceramic Technology. Co-author of two books on ceramic tile use and installation.

Member of different Spanish, European, and International Standardisation and Certification Committees on Ceramic tiles and Fired-clay products used in construction.

At present, Head of the Area for Design and Architecture at the Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica, a Mixed Institute created by agreement between Universitat Jaume I of Castellón and the Ceramic Industry Research Association (AICE). He was one of the original members of the Association for the Promotion of Ceramic Design, ALICER, and was Deputy Director of ALICER from 1993 to 2005.

Coordinator in charge of 9 R&D projects relating to ceramics, design, architectural applications, and innovative decorating processes developed at the Association for the Promotion of Ceramic Design, ALICER, and at the Instituto de Tecnología Cerámica, funded by ceramic tile manufacturers, frit and glaze producers, machinery builders for the ceramic industry, roofing tile and brick manufacturers, etc., as well as by public bodies belonging to the Valencia Region, Spanish State, and European Union.

Co-inventor of 6 innovative products and systems relating to ceramic tiles and tile installation systems.

Author of 9 articles published in scientific or technical journals and in the trade press and 9 presentations delivered at conferences on different subjects relating to design and architecture. Co-author of two books on the use and installation of ceramic tiles in architecture.

He has been awarded four Prizes for different projects in national and international Design Competitions.

Teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts at Castellón in Computer-Aided Design during the period 1989–2005.
